Jyn speaks to Saw after a long time and he explains that the reason he left her behind as a child is that she was the best soldier and he didn’t want her to be killed. Saw knew that Jyn was not needed to fight in the battle because one more soldier would not have made a difference. In order to protect his most valuable soldier in a battle they would not win, Saw left Jyn behind. This is similar to the Marginal Product of Labor that is used by firms to determine the optimal number of employees needed to operate efficiently.
